The illusion of control: when technique meets fate
Digital work promises zero defects. This piece questions how fragile those certainties are, and argues that an agency's value lies in the rigour of its execution when the unexpected arrives.

The whale-line and the storms of the market
“All men live enveloped in whale-lines. All are born with halters round their necks; but it is only when caught in the swift, sudden turn of death, that mortals realize the silent, subtle, ever-present perils of life.” Herman Melville, Moby-Dick, chapter 60, “The Line”.
In Melville’s novel, the whale-line is not just a fishing tool. It is the rope that runs out at full speed through the whaleboat, ready to drag a sailor to the bottom in a fraction of a second. A relentless allegory of the human condition: whatever our science, our technique or our confidence, we remain exposed to chaos and to the unexpected.
Carried over into business and digital work, the image becomes particularly sharp.
The hubris of “all-digital”
Today, web businesses compete with polished promises. We are sold:
- perfect automation,
- the all-knowing algorithm,
- total control of the market.
Impressive code architectures get built while an elementary rule of the field is forgotten: the first grain of sand, a market that turns, a partner who lets you down, a business model that changes, can crack a structure in an instant.
Business is hard. Today’s economy looks more like a rough sea than a calm river you could plot on a spreadsheet. Claiming otherwise is selling an illusion.
ABiL MEDiAS’s answer: precision and solid foundations
Since zero risk does not exist, what is left? Precise execution, refusing the superfluous, and solid tools.
In unstable times, the value of an online presence does not lie in marketing gloss, but in sound technical choices.
- Show what is real. When talk drifts, a 360° virtual tour shows a place as it is and lets visitors judge for themselves.
- Build sound infrastructure. Structuring data flows, designing custom tools, taking care of visual identity and print: every technical detail has to hold when everything else wobbles.
Sailing with open eyes
Accepting that we do not control everything is not defeatism. It is the starting point of any serious strategy.
At ABiL MEDiAS, we do not claim to tame the storms of the market. We build solid tools, websites made to last and visual materials that hold up when the sea turns grey.
In the face of what life and business throw at us, a well-built ship beats a handsome hull painted in trompe-l’œil.
